Brink's-Mat robbery
I watched a great true crime documentary about this on Channel 5 last night. What a murky affair. It reminded me that some right shady and notorious characters were involved in it including the 'road rage murderer' Kenneth Noye, who was acquitted of murdering an undercover surveillance copper doing reconnaissance in his mansion on the grounds of self defence.

They reckon stolen Brink's-Mat gold bullion was at one point to be found it most of the gold jewellery in London given most of it was never recovered. Mental.

What are your memories of this infamous event?

Thinking about this I've just remembered
I was a junior sales rep back in those days, part of my manor was our Heathrow site, no computers plenty of cold calling wearing out the shoe leather
Anyway, I tipped up upon another industrial estate and down the bottom was a curious warehouse without signage, plenty of cctv, I strolled up and received an unusual 'welcome' from a load of plod that suddenly appeared
Transpires it was the BM site that had been hit a couple of days prior

I am looking forward to posh BBC actors attempting a 'right royal barrel of cockney monkeys' accent, though...

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
The BBC series could go either way, couldn't it?

It might be great. But the case is one of the many 70s/80s/90s Brit crime cases where there's so much mythology, bullshit and 'bloke dahn pub says' about it...that it's often hard to know the reality.

I read a lot about the Brinks Mat case while researching a book I wrote a few years ago. The book didn't cover the heist, or the people directly involved, but the robbery had a tangential impact on people and issues I did cover.

So I'm no expert on it, by any means, but the whole case looks like yet another of those strangely celebrated cases that's two parts fact, three parts bullshit, three parts corruption and five parts 'bloke dahn pub said'...

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
I worked for Brink’s a little over 10 years ago. Probably the dodgiest ‘legit’ firm I’ve ever encountered.

Walked out after three weeks when they finally gave me my contract of employment, with vastly different job description to the role I’d agreed - queried it with the director I was reporting to, who actually said “That’s the role now. And if you don’t want to do it, then there’s the door.” To which I replied with “Ok then” and left. Never heard a thing from them again, even had to do a P46 as they were too incompetent to produce a P45.

In the three weeks I was there, the people I met and the culture they had left me in no doubt that even any rumour of dodgy practice and inside jobs are absolutely true

Yes Manuel. I have seen a couple of trailers for the upcoming BBC drama based on this, called 'The Gold'. Hugh Bonneville is the biggest name starring in it. Looks like he plays (with a dodgy sounding cockney accent) the chief copper on the case.

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
The BBC have a mini series on this soon, should be good.

Ronnie Knight got nicked and did about 10 years for handling some of the stolen money, taking it to Spain for his brother.

I think they only recovered around 20% of the cash/gold.

bruuuno, read the book Legacy by Michael Gillard if you haven’t already.

That should give you a good old lolz at what Essex Police have been up to the last 30/40 years (nod to the MET too)

The bent cunts.

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
During lockdown I went down many online wormholes relating to corruption in the met and Essex during the last 40 years and it blew my mind tbh. The gold finger shooting is a good example, as is when James Tomkins evidence got lost just two examples of many.. the rettendon murders also laughably stitched up.. sorry if not relevant to op

Crassus. The guard I referred to was Michael Scouse. He wasn't the inside man.

I was a bit too young to be interested in this when it happened, but I remember all the tabloid photos of Marnie Palmer with her Dulux Dog hairdo. She was a proper 80s BIRD.

I liked the way Essex old Bill missed the fact that John Palmer had been shot dead.

I know it was supposedly unconnected with Brinks-Mat but….

Hahaha!

Correct?

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
My stepfather was a manager at Brinks Mat until shortly after this. He suddenly left and bought a pub. Nothing to do with the robbery although clearly an inside job. That's what he said anyway.

The guard who had petrol poured over him and was interviewed was a friend of his.

Re: Brink's-Mat robbery
Wasn't the copper one of two ex SAS lads?
Due to the layout of the property regular surveillance would have been rumbled so they sent a couple of 'specialists' in, one got caught due to guard dogs kicking off

Also, there was allegedly huge plod corruption at play, no great shock there but upon a lunatic scale at the Yard with masonic links too
Dodgy business with a legacy of fatalities thereafter
